3 TIPS FOR COLOR BLOCKING

I love a good color blocking moment – see here, here, and here for a few favorites. Color blocking comes easy to me because it allows me to play with color or make a statement with my outfit if I don’t feel the need to say much that day. Because we’re moving into my favorite time of year to color block – the dreariness of colder weather makes me want to wear color all the time – I figured I share a few tips that I consider when I’m color blocking.

USE COLORS IN THE SAME TONE

When I was putting this look together, I tried the blue with a pastel yellow, and it didn’t look right together. That’s because the bright blue it a different tone than the pastel yellow. So when mixing colors, think about the item’s tone or brightness, and mix it with similar tones. Think mixing neons with other neons (like I did here) or pastels with other pastels.

YOU DON’T NEED BOLD COLORS TO COLOR BLOCK

A common misconception with color blocking is that you must mix a bright color with another bright color. Color blocking can also be a neutral color palette with a pop of color – see here or here. This, in my opinion, is the easiest way to color block. My neutral loving folks can use this as a way to add color to their look.

THROW IN ANOTHER COLOR

But only if it makes sense. In this blue and yellow look, my third color is pink on my lips. It adds to the look without being too overwhelming. Another way I could have added another color to this look is with a blazer that harmonizes with the color palette I got going on. If it feels too much or doesn’t harmonize with the palette, just stick to the two or three colors in your look.
