Hey, y’all! Welcome back to the new segment on my blog where I talk about the things I’m currently doing. If you missed the first post, check it out here. I can’t believe that July is almost over! I have been doing a lot this month so, let’s just jump into what I’m doing currently.

Reading

I am enjoying the fact that I am getting a lot of leisure reading done this summer. After I finished reading Just Mercy (recap here), I jumped into The Beast Side: Living and Dying While Black in America by Dwight Watkins. This book looks at the Baltimore Uprising (if you don’t know what that is, please do yourself a favor and read up about it here) and the factors that led up to it from the perspective of a native Baltimore resident. It’s a good insight into a lot of things happening in Baltimore, including gentrification, that can be generalized to what’s happening in a lot of big cities. It’s a quick read but a great book that I think you should pick up when you get the chance.

The next book that I finished reading is Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This book is phenomenal! It’s been sitting on my shelf for far too long and I’m glad that I finally picked it up! It’s a novel that follows the story of two Nigerian people in a relationship and the challenges that they experience in Nigeria and eventually when they leave the country. This is as much I will say because anything else will spoil the book. If you haven’t read it yet, go ahead and pick up a copy.

I am clearly on a roll because I was able to finish three books this month! The third book that I read is Diaspora: Return to Africa by K.A. Gendo. I actually won this book in a giveaway contest hosted by one of my favorite bloggers, Segilola of Segilola-Ikeke. I will have to say that it started off slow but I finally got into it. It’s a book that falls into the Afrofuturism genre, which I was a bit hesitant about but it’s definitely not what I expected. It’s another quick read, that you should look into for your next book!

The last book that I am currently reading is The Turner House by Angela Flournoy. This is a book that I discovered on Well Read Black Girl and it’s a book that I just started so I don’t have much to say in regards to the plot. However, I am trying to read more books written by black authors and this book was added, like many others, to the list. I’m excited to see where the book takes me and I will be able to give a better opinion once I’m further into the book.

Watching

I’m binge-watching a lot of shows right now because I plan to end my Netflix and Hulu accounts next month. I have recently started watching Gossip Girl on Netflix. Gossip Girl started when I was already in college and I didn’t get a chance to really get into it. I can see the relevance of the show because I believe that it foreshadows the significance of blogging and social media in the 21st century. To be honest, it’s not as great as I thought it was going to be. The seasons are super long (24 episodes) and they are just so juvenile! Ugh. I moved past the second season. While it did get better, I still don’t get the appeal. The show has turned into my background noise when I’m doing work.

I’m also concurrently rewatching Boy Meets World because I discovered it was on Hulu. I typically listen to it during the day at work to pass the time while I’m working on data. I forgot how much I like that show! There were so many great shows in the 90s!
