#CURRENTLYCANCAN VOL 13

I took an unintentional break in May due to both my doctor and therapist’s recommendation of needing to slow down because I was showing signs of burnout. So, that’s exactly what I did and I’m happy to be back. But June did fly by so quickly. Maybe because my June was incredibly busy for work that I barely had to time to slow down and enjoy the month. Anyways, let’s get into what’s been on my mind this month.

01. ONE YEAR LATER

Here we are a year later. After folks posted black squares. After folks said they were “listening and learning” all in the name to “do better.” Yet, just as predicted, we are still in the same spot. Also predicted that we would be fighting the same fight and the performative allyship was all for show. This work continues to be trying. The deaths of Black folks at the hands of the police keep happening with no consequence. Men. Women. Children. No one is safe. At the time we had a little reason to celebrate, it was squashed by another police killing of a child…in a state where the stand your ground law was just updated this year that eliminated the need to retreat. But we all know the reason why this happens. I’m not sure what’s left to say. I’m tired. And I’m not okay.

02. Y’ALL WYLIN

June 2 is when Ohio lifted its mask mandate. However, as for me and my house, I’m continuing to wear a mask out in these streets. Why? Because three things were reinforced for me from this pandemic – there is no honor system, common sense ain’t common, and folks are gross. Also, I’ve gotten extremely comfortable wearing a mask in public anyway so I’m honestly good with it. With the delta variant springing up and folks still not wanted to get vaccinated, I think it’s best for everyone that I continue to wear my mask.

03. FREEDOM DAY

I can’t believe we saw the day that Juneteenth would be a national holiday. It’s also interesting that many states are fighting to pass legislation to ban the teaching of Critical Race Theory – a theory that’s typically taught at the collegiate level, silly Conservatives – which would eliminate teaching the reasoning why we observe this holiday. While I celebrated that win, we need more. We need police reform. We need voting rights protected. So, while I was happy to celebrate and be Blackity Black – Black with extra seasoning – on Freedom Day, I still fight daily for the things that we actually asked for – you know, the right to be free in the country of our birth.

04. FEATURED

Last but not least, I was featured on Twenty Somethin’ and Black. It’s always an honor, and a surprise tbh, when people reach out to me to hear my story. I’m happy that people find me in my little corner of the internet to learn more about me. So go ahead and check out the article and let me know your thoughts!
