Hey y’all! As you know I took a temporary break from blogging but I’m happy to return my Currently CanCan series of what happening my neck of the woods. Feel free to catch up on previous ones here.

READING

Typically on my commutes on the Metro, I listen to music and play a game on my phone. I’ve decided to change that this year with my intention of reading more this year. For my social policy class, I read Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. This book is like no other ethnography that I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a lot of ethnographies). The book follows 8 families and their struggles of eviction in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This stories included in this book really opened my eyes about how evictions are handled and the different ways that it affects families. What made this book so exceptional is that way Desmond seamlessly combined the stories of the individuals facing eviction with the policies and quantitative data without making it sound disingenuous. I would highly recommend this book because it also covers the policy side of eviction.

COOKING

I’ve been experimenting a lot with waffles. Seriously. I’ve been making all kinds of things with my new waffle maker that I got for Christmas. I’ve literally tried different flavors and for all meals.

I’ve also been eating an abnormal amount of shrimp and grits. I found a recipe on Pinterest that I love and have been cooking this dish a lot lately.

BINGEING

I’ve rewatching old and new to me series on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime in my spare time. So far, I’ve rewatched 30 Rock, Monk, Covert Affairs, For the People, Nikita, the list goes on. My favorite so far is For the People. The second season started March 7. However, I thought it was the first season. To my surprise, I missed an entire season and ‘accidentally’ binged the entire series on a Saturday. I just caught up and have started a new series.

I haven’t gotten a chance to watch the Beyonce Homecoming special on Netflix yet. Honestly, I’ve been holding out because it’s going to be my reward when I finish classes next week. I know I’m going to watch it fifty-eleven times.

LISTENING

The Knowles sisters. Beyonce and Solange! Whew! Solange’s new album has literally been on repeat since she released it. Beyonce’s Homecoming album from her Coachella performance has been my new running and workout music.
