WHAT I’VE BEEN WATCHING

September is here and usually, Fall TV and all the new premieres would be gearing up to start. However, due to COVID, Fall TV is delayed this year. That doesn’t mean that I’ve stopped watching TV. When the pandemic hit, and I realized that we were going to be stuck in the house for a while, I decided to keep the shows with really great reviews for Fall. That way, I feel like I’m watching something new even though fall TV is a bit sparse. As I go through the list of shows I’ve watched, I’ll try my best to not give away any spoilers in case you want to watch it! Here’s what I’ve been watching and what I’m planning to watch next.

NETFLIX

what I'm watching on Netflix

Girlfriends – I never realized how much I missed this show until I started watching it! Ugh. The black girl magic is too real in this show! It was this show that I learned about, and fell in love with, Tracee Ellis Ross. I’m happy that someone finally added this show to their streaming services! I’ve always loved Girlfriends but I don’t think I really appreciated it until I became the age of the characters.

Sister Sister – Talk about 90s nostalgia! I forgot how much I loved this show growing up! While the premise of the show is something that you would only see on tv, I also loved the idea of “finding” my long lost twin. Rewatching it now, I realized how unapologetically Black it was. Shout out to all the 90s Black sitcoms that helped shape me into who I am today!

Madam Secretary – I started watching this while it was still on television but then I stopped because I started grad school and didn’t have cable or DVR. Plus, I just prefer to binge shows now because who watches commercials anymore?? Rewatching it made me realize how much I’ve missed a stable administration and people that actually know what they’re doing and understand what the meaning of diplomacy means. Even though there were certain things/decisions I didn’t necessarily agree with in the show, it was my escape from the madness, and was happily reminded of what can happen when you have stable people in a power.

How To Get Away With Murder – Whew. This. Show. So, rewatching it from the beginning to finish out the series was a lot. By a lot, I mean, wow those students were so ungrateful with everything that Annaliese did for them! Okay, granted, Annaliese wasn’t always truthful with the Keating 5 until after the fact, which was also a little annoying. But, I love this show because of the groundbreaking things that this show for Black women, especially dark skinned women. I loved the conversations and situations that Annaliese brought up to highlight some of the issues that dark skinned women face. While I wish some of those topics were a bit more nuanced, I’m glad it went there.

Godless – Wow. This show was so well done! It was a limited series with only 7 episodes. Let me be the first to say that I’ve never really been into westerns, but this on right here! Man! Great plot, excellent script, perfect acting, I loved every minute of it. It’s a little graphic, but it was so good!

HULU

Bob’s Burgers – I started Bob’s Burgers as something to put on in the background while I worked. Mostly because I don’t really care for the adult animation genre of television; I never really got into it. However, I definitely fell in like with this show because it’s actually pretty funny. I was truly shocked at how much I was laughing out loud as I watched. The characters are all hilarious but Lousie is definitely my fave! I can’t wait to see the new season.

Veronica Mars – This aged quite well. I fell in love with Kristen Bell because of this show. The witty comments, the characters, everything. I really hated how it ended at Season 3. I’m really glad that they decided to bring it back with the 4th season on Hulu. Though I cried real tears, don’t do that too often with television, with how the 4th season ended. I won’t give it away but man!! Anyways, watch this show because it’s good and Kristen Bell is wonderful in it.

Will & Grace – Rewatching Will and Grace brings a smile to my face. Though I’m still trying to decide if I liked the reboot, it was still a funny, lighthearted show. If you’re looking for an easy watch with loveable characters, this is the show for you.

Golden Girls – I’m forever watching this show! Lol I’ve seen all these episodes a million times but it will never not be funny! Sophia is definitely my favorite character. It’s her insults for me. If you want something funny and easy to watch in the background, turn it on. You won’t regret it.

Mixed-ish – Okay so this entire -ish franchise is so cute. While watching this show, it gives me a perspective that I never consider or brings up things that I’ve never had to deal with. Like Black-ish, I love how Mixed-ish talks about serious issues in the Black community while adding comedy. It’s so cute, so definitely watch it if you haven’t.

MY HULU SOON TO BE WATCHED LIST

  • Handmaiden’s Tale
  • High Fidelity

PRIME VIDEO

Alias – I absolutely loved Alias growing up. I got hooked on it in high school when they did an all-day marathon for a holiday weekend and I just couldn’t stop watching it! It struck me because she was kicking ass and taking names. I decided to rewatch it when it came to Prime back in March. And whew. Lol. So the first few seasons were good but Season 5?! Chile, why? They should’ve ended the series after 4! I also really loved Michael Vaughn when I was younger. Now? He’s just so annoying! Ugh. I’m still trying to figure out why I liked him so much. A mess. I haven’t finished Season 5 because I get angry every time I attempt to watch it. I might just let this one go cause, I’m not here for it.

Suits – I fell in love with the entire concept of Suits when it first premiered on USA Network. Though, rewatching it, I realized how super privileged it was of Mike to pretend to be a lawyer. If Mike was Black…you know what, nevermind. Despite the privileged undertones of the show, I loved the characters and the writing. I got to know Megan Markle on this show before she became a Dutchess. If you haven’t watched it, I definitely think you should get into it! Donna and Jessica are tied for my favorite character. I know that this is on Peacock but homie isn’t paying extra for the premium, no commercials, option when I can watch it on Prime without commercials for free (okay it’s not really free but I pay for the yearly plan so, in my mind, it’s free).

Bones This is another one of those shows that I put on because I never watched it when it was on television. I put it on cause I didn’t think I’d like it. Tbh, I didn’t at first. But the show grew on me and I understand why people loved this show so much. If I liked science, I would low key go back to school and become a forensic anthropologist.

Undone – When I saw the previews for the show, I was a bit confused about what it was about. I almost didn’t watch it tbh. I’m really glad that I took the plunge and watched it because it was really good. I will say that the season starts a little slow but stick with it because it does get better. I was hooked and loved the way the characters and plot were written. I’m not sure when season 2 is coming but I really can’t wait!

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan – I was a little hesitant to watch this series because I’ve never seen John Krasinski in anything else but The Office, one of my all-time favorite shows. And, tbh, I kept calling John/Jack (the J names were killing me), Jim while watching this. But, I will say that I was thrilled to see John excel in this role, and made me change the way I view him (you know, the silly guy making funny faces at the camera). I’m a sucker for all things action so I was happy to get my fill in this series. I hope they come out with a season 3 because I’ll definitely be watching.

MY PRIME SOON TO BE WATCHED LIST

  • The Boys Season 2
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3
  • Downton Abbey (I never finished this series & I refuse to watch it with commercials on Peacock)
  • Bosch Season 6
  • Hunters

DISNEY+

When I first heard that Disney was coming out with its own streaming platform, tbh, I was not happy about it. I was thinking about the Marvel series currently on Netflix and how Disney would ruin the premise of the shows. Specifically, I was thinking about the last season of Daredevil and how extremely violent is was or even The Punisher. When Disney released its platform, I was pleasantly surprised, and shocked, at how deep the catalog went. Even though I’m still wary about how the Marvel series will be transformed on this platform, I can’t say I hate what’s been happening on Disney+.

what I'm watching on Disney+

This platform has been more about nostalgic rewatches. I haven’t watched anything new because I’ve been reminiscing with all the Disney movies and series that I absolutely loved growing up (i.e., The Proud Family, Lizzie MacGuire, Smart Guy, That’s So Raven, Kim Possible, Zenon Girl of the 21st Century, etc.). One thing that I would like to tackle, just because, is watching all the Marvel and Star Wars movies in chronological order, rather than theater release date order. Before I take on this endeavor, here’s what on my watch list.

MY DISNEY+ SOON TO BE WATCHED LIST

  • Black Is King (don’t at me)
  • Hamilton (judge ya mama)
  • Mulan (when it’s off of premier access status)
  • Maleficent The Mistress of Evil

HBO NOW

Pretty Little Liars – Okay, here me out. I’ve mostly watched this again because I wanted something new to watch in the background while I work. While watching, I was reminded of how many open storylines that never got closed and characters that just vanished without any resolution. Insert my exaggerated eye roll here. I really hate when shows don’t end with a tidy resolution for all the questions I have. Rewatching it reminded me how much this show annoyed me and the situations these high school kids found themselves in. Watch at your own discretion but I don’t recommend it.

Veep – Wow. This show is HI LARRY US! Lol. The situations and things that the VP and her team get into is outlandish and awkward. It’s awkwardly hilarious! The writing and the actors make the show so great. I highly recommend everyone to watch this show whenever you need a comedic relief from all the stuff that’s happening right now.

Sex and the City – I recently rewatched the show and it just didn’t age well. Charlotte, and tbh Carrie, is very annoying. Whew. It amazes me how women characters were written in the early 2000s. After rewatching the series, I decided that I couldn’t watch it again. Carrie’s back and forth with Big and the way she treated her friends when Alexander invited her to Paris, chile, I was done. While I appreciate what Sex and City did for women and the way we think and talk about sex, it’s just not for me anymore.

Ballers – Lol this show. So, when I started watching it, I watched for Dwayne Johnson but stayed for John David Washington – who is Denzel’s son BTW (I say Denzel as if we’re friends Ha!). I’m a huge football fan so it was interesting to me “see” the other side of the game that we don’t ever think about as fans. While I’m sure many of the things were exaggerated, it was interesting to watch.

MY HBO NOW SOON TO BE WATCHED LIST

  • Watchmen
  • I May Destroy You
  • David Makes Man
  • Euphoria

SHOWTIME

I was looking over my Hulu picks and realized that some of the shows that I included were actually Showtime and not Hulu specific. I will admit I’m a little behind on the shows that I’ve been watching on Showtime so this section will focus on my soon to be watched list.

MY SHOWTIME SOON TO BE WATCHED LIST

  • Black Monday
  • House of Lies
  • City on a Hill
  • Homeland Season 8
  • Murder in the Bayou

PEACOCK

So, I recently signed up for this streaming service – as if I need to add another streaming service to my repertoire. As I’ve so eloquently put it previously, I have the free version. So, this limits the shows that I actually watch on this platform. Why pay for the premium version when a lot of the shows that I want to see are already on other streaming services that offer no commercials?? I’m reserving some of the shows that you can’t see anywhere else for a little later. Since I haven’t really watched anything there yet, I definitely have a list of shows that I can’t wait to see.

MY PEACOCK SOON TO BE WATCHED LIST

  • Hitmen
  • The Capture
  • Psych 2: Lassie Come Home
  • Brave New World

So, this was…a lot. Lol. Like I’ve said before, I watch a lot of TV. I didn’t even list all the shows I’ve been watching because this post would be a bit excessive (as if it’s not excessive right now). I decided that limiting my sections to 5 shows was a reasonable number and y’all wouldn’t judge me too much. Lol. Let me know if I should add anything to my watch list!

WHAT Y’ALL WATCHING RIGHT NOW? ANYTHING I’M MISSING ON MY LIST?
