WHY I’M REBUILDING MY WARDROBE BASICS

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, I’m a color girl! I will never not find ways to always add some color to my look. But, when I reorganized my closet, I realized that I needed to reup my wardrobe basics because they were old, outdated, or didn’t fit anymore. While my colorful wardrobe sparks joy, not having simple basics that I could incorporate with some of those colorful pieces makes it feel like I have nothing to wear. Given the number of items in my closet, that should not be the case.

NOT HAVING STAPLE ITEMS TO MIX & MATCH WITH MY COLORFUL ITEMS

I remember feeling very frustrated when I was asked to attend a work event and did not have the wardrobe basics to put together the outfit I had in my head. I spent almost 30 minutes running around trying to put a look together. I eventually did but was very disappointed that I took that long to put something together but more so that my closet doesn’t have a ton of basics that I can mix and match.

When I’m thinking wardrobe basics, it’s not that I don’t have the items – like blazers, jeans, shirts, and dresses – it’s that I don’t have a ton of those items in neutral colors. Neutral colors in these items are the foundation of every strong closet. Not having them makes it seem like you don’t have anything to wear. And if you’ve seen my closet, you would know that I have no business ever uttering those words.

SOME WARDROBE BASICS ON MY LIST

Neutral, Solid Color Blazers – Y’all, I’m lowkey embarrassed to admit that I have very few neutral color blazers. But when it comes to patterned or colored blazers, I have an abundance! All the black blazers that I own are super dated or don’t fit. So, it’s time to add more navy, camel, and black blazers to my wardrobe.

Neutral, Solid Color Shirts – Similar to the blazers, I have a ton of colorful tops. But am woefully lacking in basic colors – think black, brown, grey, etc. I recently bought a ton of basic tops from Target that I absolutely love because the fabric feels amazing but is also reasonably priced.

Neutral, Solid Color Coats – While I have recently bought a few new coats, none of them are in the colors black, navy, grey, or camel. Even though I told myself I wasn’t allowed to buy any colorful coats, my heart wasn’t cooperating with the plan. 😬

CHOOSING WHAT THE SAVE V. SPLURGE ON

Rebuilding a wardrobe takes time and money. While there are items that I will likely not splurge on, there are other items that I will be spending a little more on. When it comes to basic t-shirts and tank tops, I will be saving on these. I usually reup them every year anyway because my white t-shirts always manage to get a stain on it somehow. My favorite basic shirts and tank tops are from Target.

For blazers and coats, I will be splurging on these. Neutral colors in these items will not ever go out of style. Because I want to use them for a long time and am less likely to replace them often, I’m willing to spend a little more on the quality. I have my eye on a few things from the Banana Republic, including this blazer and this coat.
