I am 5’4″ and love wearing wide leg pants that cover my shoes. But many times, my height won’t let me live my best life! Even with the standard size, I find that those types of pants are still a little too long for me. This causes me to head over to my favorite tailor to get those pants in shape for me to wear. Because I have recently got back some pants that I just bought tailored, I thought it would be great to write a post on why you should invest in a tailor.
WHAT DOES A TAILOR DO?
Tailors are skilled folks who specialize in creating, altering, repairing, and customizing clothing and other fabric-based items. While tailors are seen in various positions throughout the fashion industry, they are needed to ensure that you look the best with the items you spend your money on.
WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN A TAILOR
MAKE YOUR CLOTHES FIT
One of the many reasons clothes look better on celebrities and models is because their clothes are tailored. Most people don’t realize that even if their clothes come straight off the rack and fit, they need to get their items tailored. Tailoring doesn’t have to mean completely altering the piece (unless you want to, of course). Tailoring could include hemming your pants to fit your height. This slight change can make you look 10 times more put together. ,
Take, for example, the jumpsuit you see below. The image on the left was taken before it was hemmed and the right post-hem. My jumpsuit now looks like it was made to fit my height by grazing the floor perfectly, rather than having extra fabric bunching up around my feet. Hemming isn’t the only thing a tailor can do. If you lost or gained a few pounds, a tailor can take your item in or out to give you the best fit in your clothes.
REPAIR YOUR CLOTHES
Another good reason to invest in a tailor is because they can fix the broken items on your clothes. Have you tried to zip up your favorite dress or skirt and because the zipper was cheap, the foot came off? Did your button fall off and it needs to be replaced or put back on? Did you rip the split of the skirt? All of these things have happened to me and I was able to take it to the tailor to get it fixed. Tailors are not miracle workers; they can’t fix everything damaged. But before you consider tossing that item, go to a tailor and see if they can repair it.
LONG TERM SAVINGS FOR YOUR WALLET & THE ENVIRONMENT
While a tailor might cost more upfront, it will save you money in the long run. A tailor can alter your clothes to fit you as you grow and keep you from spending money on more clothes. When you’re saving money on clothing, it’s not only great for your wallet but also better for the environment.
